The “Quartier Latin” has been the
bastion of the Paris University and
various academies since the 13th
century. In 1215, the oldest university
in Europe drew up its first bylaws on
the slopes of the Montagne Sainte-
Geneviève. The Sorbonne was
founded in 1257. It was followed by
the Collège de France in 1530. During
the following century, the Ecole
Polytechnique, the Ecole Normale
Supérieure, and the prestigious Louisle-Grand
and Henri IV Lycées were
also founded.
Depuis le 13ème siècle, le Quartier
Latin est le fief de l’université et des
écoles parisiennes. En 1215, sur les
flancs de la Montagne Sainte-
Geneviève, la plus ancienne université
d’Europe se dote de ses premiers
statuts. Quant à la Sorbonne, elle est
fondée en 1257. Suivra le Collège de
France en 1530. Puis, au siècle suivant,
l’Ecole Polytechnique, l’Ecole Normale
Supérieure, tout comme les
prestigieux lycées Louis-le-Grand et
Henri IV.

and Manuscripts Museum,
retraces the infancy of air mail.
Relive this human adventure.
Montgolfier, Nadar, Blériot, Lindbergh,
Mermoz, Guillaumet and Saint-Exupéry…
Names that have marked the history
of the conquest of the skies. They are all to
be found in the "Letters, the high-flying adventure:
the infancy of air mail" exhibition.
This retrospective runs until November 2 at
the Letters and Manuscripts Museum, a
stone's throw from the Buci market and the
Odéon crossroads. The event is organised
in partnership with the Air France Museum,
the Le Bourget Air and Space Museum, the
Pierre-Georges Latécoère Association and
Plume magazine.
The history of air mail is in all respects a fabulous
human adventure, depicted here
through various letters, photographs,
posters and documents relating to aerostats
and early air mail.
Beside the famous figures such as Mermoz

tale». Cette rétrospective est proposée,
jusqu’au 2 novembre, au musée des Lettres
et manuscrits, situé à deux pas du marché
Buci et du carrefour de l’Odéon. Un événement
orchestré en partenariat avec le
Musée Air France, le Musée de l’Air et de

and Guillaumet, the exhibition also honours
the lesser-known heroes, sparing a thought
for the many pilots who gave their lives to
establish regular airmail links between
continents. It is the exploits of both famous
and forgotten pioneers of aviation that are
told at the Letters and Manuscripts Museum,
through flight log books, exchanges of correspondence,
illustrated books, press cuttings
and advertising brochures. Written evidence
of an exceptional era which began in
1870, the date of the first air mail service,
and lasted until the 1930s, when a regular
route between France and South America
was finally established. A journey through
time full of unexpected events, anecdotes
and souvenirs. ■
